Your roofer says the claim was wrongly denied. Here is what to do next

August 20265 min readDenied claims

It is a strange moment. The roofing contractor who inspected your storm damage is standing in your driveway telling you the insurance company got it wrong: the damage is real, the denial does not match what is on the roof, and the payout would not cover half the repair anyway. So why can't the roofer just fix it with the insurer?

Why your contractor cannot fight the denial for you

In most states, negotiating an insurance claim on a policyholder's behalf is a licensed activity. Your contractor can document damage, provide an estimate, and answer the adjuster's questions about scope, but the moment they start arguing coverage or negotiating the settlement, they are practicing public adjusting without a license. Good contractors know exactly where that line is, which is why the honest ones stop at "this denial is wrong" and do not go further.

Who can fight it

Three parties can challenge a denial or a lowball scope: you, a licensed attorney, or a licensed public adjuster. On most residential claims a public adjuster is the practical choice. They work on contingency, they re-scope the loss themselves, and they negotiate with the carrier as your representative. If the disagreement is about the amount rather than coverage itself, the appraisal clause in your policy is another route, with an appraiser on each side and a neutral umpire deciding. Our guides on public adjusters and the appraisal clause walk through both.

If your contractor offers to refer you, take it seriously

A growing number of contractors can now hand your claim directly to a licensed claims professional through a referral system built into their software, called Claim Rescue. Here is what that looks like from your side:

So if an email lands in your inbox saying your contractor wants to refer your claim for professional review, that is what it is: a consent form, not a sales pitch. Approving it just lets a licensed professional look.
